I think reflecting on our motives in our Christian walk is very important. I often ask myself why I love to sing on praise team. Is it because I want recognition or is it because I love leading people into a intimate worship with God and feel closer to Him when I am. Do I help in the nursery because I have a responsibility to do so or do I love teaching kids about God. We have to be careful that what we do is for the right reasons. We might be able to hide them from others, but we can't hide them from God.
I've never really thought about there being a motive behind my personality. I feel like I'm an outgoing friendly person who thrives on structure and organization. Why am I like this? Is there some motive behind it all? Good things to think and pray about.
I think that it is always good to keep tabs on our own motives. Are we doing things with the right heart attitude or because it will make us look good or because we are trying to meet some expectation. Ultimately, I hope that what I do is to bring glory to God and to show others His love.
I like what Julie said about checking our motives in how we serve, especially in the ministry. If we are doing something for the wrong reason, God probably has someone else that would do it for the right reason and probably even do it better. John 3:30 says "He must become greater, I must become less." That is not possible if we are doing something in His Kingdom with the wrong motives.
I have never thought about the motives of my personality, either. It is something to think about, though. I could probably drown myself in analizing every aspect of my personality. I think we have to find a healthy balance in this area.
