I really need to become more consistent in an ongoing "mealtime battle" to keep the boys, our 2 year old in particular, seated at mealtime. We have gotten to the point that lunch and dinner can drag on because of goofing off (on the part of both of the older boys) and J continually getting up from his seat. I am lacking a game plan in this area, which is necessary before I can be consistent with anything. I struggle with the fact that J honestly has a time staying sill. Understanding that he is full of energy, I would like to come up with some creative way to help him in this area, but I am having some trouble. My parents used to allow my brother to stand at the dinner table, which helped him with this problem. We may have to try that tactic and then be consistent in enforcing the rules of staying in front of his plate until he is finished. Any other ideas?!?! I am completely open to any suggestions anyone might have on this!
I need to be more consistent with carrying out the discipline. She mentioned in the book that sometimes we are too tired to fight that battle again, but that it's important to carry on. Some days I'm just too tired to discipline. I just want to let it go and start over the next day. However, I need to make the punishment stick for each time the behavior occurs. I'm sure the behavior would go away quicker if I just stayed consistant.
As far as meal times, it not very creative, but when the kids get down and run around we give them a warning and the next time they get down dinner is over for them. They don't get their dinner back or get a snack later. They have to wait until the next mealtime to eat.
