I think that I really needed this chapter right now as a point of refocusing as a parent. I found one particular statement on page 111 very encouraging. "In teaching our children to obey, we must keep in mind that we are building for the future. It may be tedious and unpleasant at the moment, but our goal is an obedient, self-disciplined adult."
I often find myself frustrated and thinking "what are we doing wrong" when some days I feel like all I do is discipline or redirect my children's behavior--"tedious" being a very good description of how I feel discipline can be at this stage. It helped me to hear someone else say that it is "tedious" work, especially with children at the ages that my kids are currently. It helped me to realize that I am not the only one and to "hang in there" because we are on the right path.
Like Kasey, I sometimes feel like all I do is discipline. She mentioned that most of the discipline comes before the age of four and after that it gets easier and you can start taking away privileges after that. I have noticed that Jaxon is much quicker to comply with instruction than Jadyn. He has learned the expected behavior and is usually pretty good about doing it. Jadyn, on the other hand, is still in the stage of needing those boundaries set and she is still pushing to see how consistent I am going to be.
Having this book reinforce the things I'm doing was very encouraging.
