Meditate on Christ's prayer in John 17.

How do I see the priorities illustrated in this prayer?

Jesus showed us that his first priority was God. He came to earth to do the will of the Father and that's what he did. He also found time to be alone with Him in prayer everyday.

Jesus spent a great deal of time praying for his disciples and spending time with them. He mentored them and prayed a covering of protection over them. They were his family and he put them next after God. It doesn't really mention it in the prayer, but Jesus also had a small group of three that he spent extra time with. He showed the importance of having a few close relationships to keep us accountable.

At the end of his prayer he prayed for all who ever believe. He is such a great example of loving everyone, even our enemies and sharing God with them.

Jesus prayed only to glorify God. All of his prayers served one purpose, to glorify God. I often pray for my family and friends but rarely do I concentrate on prayers that have the only purpuse of gloriying God rather than for selfish purposes.

Jesus put his time with the Father first and deeply seeked to glorify God, whatever that would take.

I see his disciples in this prayer as his family and his close circle of believers. The way in which he prays for them is simply amazing and shows his genuine love and concern for them, as well as his desire that they be protected, yet fulfill the Father's plan for each one of them. (When he was praying for them not to be necessarily taken from the world, but protected from the enemy.)

Finally, his prayer for new believers is like the priority for work. First I read it and thought of the emphasis that he was placing on expanding the Kingdom. Then, the Father showed me in the second reading that Jesus was not only praying for future believers, but for me. How awesome it is that my Savior was praying for me even before the cross and that he deeply desired for me to have the same closeness with the Father that he has. If you have a chance, read through it and focus in on the fact that as he died on the cross for each of us personally, that prayer was for each of us personally. It is extremely powerful!
